Great food. Great prices. Great ambiance.
I think Ruby's knows exactly what it is and does it well. -

Cute little spot!
We came at a pretty slow time, which means we were able to park in the tiny lot behind the stand -- bonus.
The Impossible burgers were tasty, and we thoroughly devoured them with no delay. Our fries and tots were not so great, so here's hoping next time the sides are more dialed in.
Great location for this place, just a hop from some a few different bars, so I'm sure I'll be back again soon to sample some of the other items on the menu. In particular, I need to check out the cajun fries, and I'm curious about the breakfast burrito...but, of course, I gotta grab one of those shakes, which look pretty delightful.
Nice enough staff, and cute tables up front for outdoor nomming. Enjoy. -

First impressions REALLY have an effect on me. If I see any one thing or person in its initial light; then I have a difficult time shaking that image or experience even if it is re-invented. This is precisely the case with Ruby's Shake Shop. Ruby's Shake Shop is a 50s diner-themed burger stand that is conceptualized from the standalone chain that frequents Southern California (Ruby's Diner). The issue? This new walk-up location is housed where a dirty, 'ghetto' burger stand used to be and I simply can't forget about the original tenant of the real estate. Regardless, I have been intrigued by this new neighbor and had to try it...
Ruby's Shake Shop is located on the corner of Lankershim/Otsego in the Noho Art District and simply can't be missed with its red and white All American 50s facade, tiles, and pinup model on roller skates logo. Even though Ruby's Shake Shop is simply a order counter with some seating; it magically transports you to a 50s diner with clean esthetics and clever details like pumping 50s records one would find on a juke box through the sound system. It isn't over the top and yet is successful in its sentiment.
If crowds are any indication of merit; then Ruby's is on-top being that it is as rowdy as a 50s sock-hop at all times of the day from morning until night. The menu isn't too extensive but offers breakfast dishes, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, sides/soups, and sundaes/shakes/malts galore! Ruby's basically has a little bit of everything and the icing on the cake is that it has some vegetarian and gluten-free options which makes this hamburger stand 'very -LA'.
My dining partner and I went to Ruby's at approximately 10pm on a Friday night meaning that Ruby's had some patrons and certainly wasn't 'dead' but it wasn't chaotically crazy, either. I've been dying to try a shake or malt (they are my weakness!) but we ended up choosing a Southwest Grilled Cheese (grilled Parmesan sourdough filled with caramelized onions, jack cheese and bell peppers and chipotle mayo - $7.99) and a side of fries ($2.49) to share. There was a slight hiccup as we ordered with the credit card machine not working and the order-taker remarking on how this happens "often". Well, perhaps you should take care of that?
We settled in to wait for our order... and waited... and waited. No really, folks! Ruby's has a crazy long wait that didn't make sense for the amount of customers despite the food being cooked fresh on the spot. Ruby's certainly loses points for how long it took to deliver our food.
However, this was redeemed by the portion sizes which is excellent for the price. The fries are perfect for 2-3 people (depending on how you eat) and the Southwest Grilled Cheese was filled to the brink with fillings - Ruby's certainly doesn't skimp! So, how were the flavors, you ask?
The Southwest Grilled Cheese was a melty-gooey, epitome of a diner sandwich served on crusty, thick bread. This is that greasy stuff of heartburn dreams! The flavors were tasty and each ingredient paired well with each other - it was simply a little bland. Even a touch of salt would have added some pizazz but overall, quite good! The fries, which were a basket of shoestring-style fries were 'okay'. They literally had NO salt and got soft and cold wayyyy too quickly. But if eaten immediately with salt and ketchup; then they get the job done.
Basically, Ruby's Shake Shop isn't a gourmet eatery but is rather satisfying and clever in its diner approach and unique twist on a hamburger stand. Certainly something to try if in the area and craving a little 50s fare. Just be ready for a wait and perhaps a non-working credit card machine. And maybe you will see me because I still need to try a shake or a malt! -

I've been eyeing this place for months and finally decided today was the day , I came just before the brunch rush and ordered an el gordo burrito and beignets to go . I waited for about 10 or so minutes before my number was called. When I opened the bag , everything was fresh and warm. The beignets were so so so good and such a big order for the price . The burrito was well named , filled with eggs, tots, cheese, and bacon. The burrito tasted great and I can see why it's a popular item on the menu .

In from Chicago and just had a film premiere up the street - this place is wonderful! Great fresh cheeseburgers, crispy fries and a sweet strawberry shake. They redid the old burger stand and it is an architectural marvel.
